August is Jim Gibbs’ favorite month in the Gardens. Annuals reach peak bloom and provide brilliant color throughout the Gardens especially in combination with perennials. Hundreds of roses in shades of red, pink, yellow and white fill the air with fragrance and color.
Crape myrtles thrive in the heat of summer, flowering in shades of pink and magenta.
Waterlilies, both hardy and tropical types, glisten like jewels on the ponds. Late blooming varieties of hydrangeas include “PeeGee” types that flower in full sun. Look for Hydrangea paniculata ‘Vanilla Strawberry’ with flowers that start out white and turn shades of pink and even crimson.
